I am, by nature, an introvert. I’m shy and find it hard to talk to strangers sometimes. There have been occasions, however, when I felt compelled to talk to a total stranger when it appeared they needed help. You never know what someone else is going through and sometimes just a kind word can turn someone’s day or life completely around.
Today, I read a wonderful story about a man living on the coast of Australia, near Sydney. He bought his home for the beautiful views, but soon discovered that it was a popular spot for people to commit suicide. For the past 40 years, he has been inviting would be jumpers across the street to his house for tea. He has saved many lives simply by reaching out to strangers and giving them the kind gesture of a cup of tea and a talk. Many accepted his offer and turned their lives around. There were some, unfortunately, who didn’t accept his offer, but that doesn’t deter him from continuing to reach out.
It’s an inspiring story and it makes me think of how I can push past my shyness to do something good and worthwhile like this. I ask you to read this story and then challenge yourself to do something kind for someone you don’t know.
